Waiting For Time
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

My link with the past was broken today,
Dad called and said "Grandpa passed away."
Was there a reason ? Why did he die ?
We'll miss him, my daughters, my wife, and I.

I took the last picture into moments now passed,
Of grandpa with my daughters, a valued treasure to last.
Something told me to take it, before it became too late,
And the clock ceased from ticking, as time does not wait.

But deep down inside I'm wondering still,
Was there still more, that I had to fulfill.
And how long before we forget him ? How long will it take ?
I dare say it's not long at all, for time it will abate.

But what did I do, did I even strive,
To visit him more often, while he was yet alive?
Or did I sometimes forget him when he was still here,
And now it is too late, to dry this neglect filled tear.

We turned the last page, another book is closed,
My link with the past was broken today, this is what I supposed.
That there was no rush to see him, no, no hurry at all,
I told my daughter "We'll see him, this spring, this summer, this fall."

You see, I forgot about time, that it does not stand still,
Until bitter reality made me swallow the pill.
Yes, my daughter said "Let's go see Grandpa, please can we go Dad ?"
And I, like a fool, said "no," how so sad.

For I robbed her of a moment that cannot be replaced,
And now that he's gone forever, my memory cannot be erased.
And now I have learned to little too late,
And I tell her I'm sorry, that I always told her "wait."

But I've learned a lesson I shall never forget,
That I can still put to practice, It's not too late yet.
For Grandma's alone now and she needs us even more,
Than all of the times we gave her before.

So go ahead my daughter and ask me once more,
"Can I visit Grandma," and I won't answer like before,
For time does not wait for no one my dear,
So let's go see Grandma, she'll say "It's nice to see you here."

ABOUT THIS POEM:

The above poem was written just days after my grandfather passed away.
We visited my Grandparents fairly often, yet we could have done
even more, had we known time was already running out............
